New Delhi: India is set to strengthen the security of sensitive areas and religious sites along the Pakistan border. For this, the Indian Army has issued a tender to the state-owned company Advanced Weapons and Equipment India Limited (AWEIL) to purchase six new AK-630 air defence gun systems.

Need felt during Operation Sindoor

According to Army officials, the need for these gun systems was felt during Operation Sindoor, when the Pakistani Army targeted populated areas and religious sites in Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab. Their deployment will provide better protection against airborne threats in these areas.

These gun systems are part of ‘Mission Sudarshan Chakra,’ which PM Narendra Modi announced in his speech from the Red Fort on August 15. Its goal is to develop an indigenous, multi-layered security shield by 2035, which will include surveillance, cybersecurity, and air defence systems.

Identifies targets in all weather conditions

The AK-630 is a 30mm multi-barrel mobile gun system capable of firing approximately 3,000 rounds per minute and has a range of up to 4 km. It will be mounted on a trailer towed by a high-mobility vehicle.

The system will be capable of intercepting airborne attacks such as drones, rockets, artillery, and mortars (URAM). It will also feature an all-weather electro-optical fire control system that can identify targets in all weather conditions.

Akash Tir Defence System

India’s Akash Tir Command and Control System has been compared with Israel’s Iron Dome system. The Akash Tir Command and Control System was highly praised by PM Modi on May 13 at Adampur Airbase in Punjab, after Operation Sindoor, during which hundreds of drones, missiles, and rockets coming from Pakistan were shot down mid-air.

Akash Tir is an indigenous artificial intelligence-powered air defense system jointly designed and developed for the Indian Army by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), and Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL).

It monitors low-level airspace and controls ground-based air defence weapon systems. It integrates radar, sensors, and communication systems into a single network capable of detecting, tracking, and neutralising aerial threats in real time.
